It Is Time To Come Together

Today's Beautiful Nourishment:
Exercise: 2.2 mile early morning run
Breakfast:
Chatham Sheep Yogurt with raw almonds, bee pollen, Healthforce Nutritionals Dark Mint Maca, Pure Planet Spirulina, mixed berries (Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries), Pure New Hampshire Maple Syrup, shredded coconut

Lunch:
Sottocenere Cheese with Truffles from Italy
Herbed olives
G.T. Dave Guava Kombucha

Dinner:
The Best Farm Greens Ever!!! From my Spring farm CSA share and picked yesterday morning; Red Clover Farms in Windsor, CT: Kale, collards, chard, spinach, thyme, rosemary, beets with wild rice tempeh; all steamed and "drizzled" with olive oil, tahini and sea salt; WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW!! These truly are the most flavorful, robust and delicious fresh farm greens I have ever tasted.

Dessert:
Organic Nectars Cherry Chocolate Swirl raw ice cream

Just to say something about the sheep yogurt mix from breakfast: I add a heaping tablespoon of this dark green spirulina and the whole mix turns deep forest green, but the flavor is madly delicious, as the spirulina is the best I have ever tasted and blends into all the other ingredients, boosting the body with oxygen and chlorophyl. It's a wonderful way to get the dense green nutrients with flavor.

Last week was the 24th "anniversary" of the nuclear meltdown at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Russia.
I spent many earlier years being an advocate for the closing of Indian Point Nuclear Plant in Buchanan, NY, to no avail; it is still running, though there was a "small" meltdown in the 1970's and it continues to leak Strontium 90 into the Hudson River.
As a friend of mine said to me recently, "If we don't have the capacity to handle a nuclear meltdown, we shouldn't be playing with nuclear power plants." It's that simple.
Indian Point is exactly the same plant as the Fukoshima plant in Japan, as are others around the country and world.
I encourage and urge you to take the time to listen to the 24 minute news piece on the 25th anniversary of Chernobyl and it ramifications today. I do want to make you aware that there is a scene of today's children in those areas of Russia where there was leakage from that and another nuclear reactor, that could be hard for some to view, as it shows the physical long-term effects of this disaster.

I will be blogging more about this, but I know I am being called to say, "No More" to the continued proliferation of nuclear power plants and imminent danger in which they place each living being's life and health. As the earth is shifting geologically and with weather with such speed these days, we are not equipped to handle the responses of nature triggering the reactions of these power plants, which is exactly what happened in Japan. It is time to stand up, come together in numbers and say, "We must put an end to this irresponsibility and begin to save the lives of our children."
Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

No More Latkes...Please!

It's cold outside today. The days are darker and the wind has been whipping. You may notice unusual or "old" emotions and physical feelings surfacing or resurfacing. Plus, it's the proverbial holiday time; time for feeling oh so joyful. What if you're not???
More on this in a minute...

Today's Food:
No Breakfast - detox
Lunch: 2 tangelos
small bowl of raw almonds
fork-ful of raw nutella cashew cream pie (!)

Dinner:
Large salad with radicchio, red leaf lettuce, carrot, avocado and mushrooms, with garlic stuffed olives, nutritional yeast, olive oil, Bragg's Amino Acids, sea salt

20 oz. water

Dessert
Piece of raw nutella cashew cream pie
YUM!!! This pie was made by my friend and raw chef Joy Perlow, inspired by Ani Phyo's cake recipe

Today's RawReformBlog, from Angela Stokes-Monarch, includes a brand new song by Angela, part of which came to her in a dream.
Being that this has been a week of deep emotions for me, I so loved listening to her sing this song and wanted to share the link with my readers. Here it is; enjoy:

Thank you, Angela!

There's a talk I give this time of year entitled, "10 Tools to Take You Through the Holidays." I've taught it since 2003. It's all about how to keep in balance this time of year and many have found it valuable in navigating their own jouneys through the holidays; Thanksgiving through New Year's.
There is an expectation of how we should feel during this season of joy. It does not take into account that holiday time is also a time we might remember those we have lost and often find ourselves missing them. Additionally, it is a time when our food and our schedules are turned upside down and issues of body image, "willpower" and stress can come into play.
I found this happening to me. I have not felt this way in many, many years.
But i did not heed my own advice of balance.
I am in a glorious new relationship, which of course means later nights, less sleep, shifts in some daily routines and days without working out! or does it.....
It did for me, and I understood that new love, as my colleague and partner in crime and couseling Joanna Bronfman said to me, releases new chemicals in our bodies, makes us feel like space cadets and often throws us off our game completely. But, she said, just let go and enjoy it! And I did.....and when my head was spinning, I ran to a yoga class, took a run and got my food back on track.
Then came Hanukah and latke time. For those who don't know, latkes are the potato pancakes we eat once a year at Hanukah, and they are delicious.
As a raw foodist, I choose to enjoy these yummy morsels of my heritage.
This year, I had the pleasure of walking into my aunt and uncle's beautiful home in Brooklyn, and seeing my aunt kitchen-deep in latkes; making about a hundred of them for the gathering. The kitchen was filled with the smell of warm oil and cooking potatoes, and I bathed in it. Then I ate a whole bunch.
Cut to the next day. My friend Liz and I engaged in our holiday tradition of making latkes; we made sweet potato latkes and wasabi latkes; and I ate some more. We drank Soy Nog, laughed and shared conversation as only two women can.
That night, we got together with a group of women to celebrate, and Laurel made zucchini latkes, leek latkes and sweet potato latkes; and I ate many more.
Cut to Tuesday morning; I felt lousy! I was foggy, low mood akin to depression, off balance and my whole immune system felt low. This raw foodist was hurting! I couldn't even distinguish which was real and which biochemical.
OK, I decided, I am so done with latkes this year.
Back to running, raw food, more sleep and juicy conversations with my girlfriends to share what I was experiencing, I soon felt much better.
All the beauty of a wonderful relationship and holiday tradition knocked me on my butt.
I needed to honor my personal needs. My body and psyche thrive on these four things:
Proper sleep, raw food, consistent exercise and time for me to connect with my spirit.
I will be writing more about this subject through the New Year.
Meanwhile, get clear in what you need to keep thriving and stay in balance through the holidays. Write in and share it with others....
And if you're eating latkes, they're great with apple sauce and sour cream!

Are You Eating Late at Night?

Today's Yummy Food:

No Breakfast

Lunch:
Bowl of Seaweed Chowder (see previous T.H.E. blogs for recipe)
A new creation: 1 mushed banana with 1 heaping tablespoon of raw, crunchy almond butter, shredded coconut and sprinkled with cinnamon; all mushed together (confession: I had two of these, just because it was so outrageous, but I recommend having one for proper calories and fat)

Snack:
RawRevolution chocolate hazelnut bar

24 ounces water

Dinner:
Salad with romaine, cabbage, daikon, carrot, cuke, sprouts with nutritional yeast, dulse, olive oil and sea salt
a few herbed olives

12 ounces of water

No more late nighttime desserts for me! Did you know that we are supposed to finish eating at least 3 hours before we go to bed? Why? Because nighttime and sleep time are the hours where our bodies complete the digestion process and move into the detoxification process. If we keep eating, we are going to bed with undigested food that simply stagnates and ferments in our bodies, not ending up where it is supposed to. Not only that, we don't allow our body to rest and detoxify; we are forcing them to work extra hard, like keeping our car running overnight even when we are not driving it. This stresses the body.
I would add to the 3 hour rule not to eat after 7:30, unless you are out for a special evening with friends. Of late, through the Winter months of hibernating, I would often get a surge of energy to complete things at around 9:00 PM; then I would be at my computer for a couple of hours, and I would eat my raw desserts during this time. The results? Fatigue, weight gain and gas.
So, I am back to my original lifestyle; no late-night grazing; no eating after 7:30 unless out with friends. If you don't get home from work until then, eat your larger meal during the day and some snacks that are easy to access (a raw bar or a handful of raw nuts) in the late afternoon. If you must must eat when you get home, just have a green smoothie or a fresh Thai coconut with coconut water and meat.
Come join me on cleaning out our bodies and giving them some rest...
and in the morning, please start your day with a large glass of lemon water to detoxify your liver.

Early in the morning or later in the day are the most favorable time to go outside and 'breathe in' the sun. It is during these hours that the sun is not yet at its full force but still offers us the gift of Vitamin D.
Anytime I am creating a protocol for bone health, I always list the sun as a pivotal part of the healing and renewal process; the same for mood imbalances.
The most profound healing is not found in a pill or a capsule; it is found in nature. You would be surprised how much sun there is in Winter, too. By running outside all year round, I am always oxygenating my lungs, and by running during the warmest hours of Winter, I get the Winter sun; different than Summer sun but powerful in its own right. The Winter sun is what kept my mood elevated through the cold and snowy weather. I would smile at the sun and she would smile back at me. If Spring is when you come out of hibernation, now is your time! Go out in the morning for a walk and feel the warmth of the early morning sun. If you live near the beach or ocean, let your walk steer you in that direction. Being by the water's edge is a great way to detoxify. Allow for the ocean, just by walking beside it, to pull out the toxins with every exhale your breathe. Breathe in the gifts of the ocean floor. Did you know that these days, all the highest minerals are now in the ocean beds? If you've never caught a sunrise, try it and see what the experience is like for you. I often catch them while running in the late Spring or Summer. My favorite most recent sunsrise was in Nantucket over last Labor Day, meeting one of my oldest and dearest friends at Siasconset Beach for a morning sunrise and deep conversation, as only she and I know how to have it. I got there first, and only a couple of others were sitting on the beach. It was a very unusual time of year and month, as behind me was a full moon still up in the sky and before me the birth of a new sun; it brought tears to my eyes and gratitude to my soul. When Jessica joined me, we were in instant exhiliration and awe; the profound connection of our years' old friendship and love of Nantucket, along with the many times we had sat on a beach together and told each other our secrets, continued to solidify our deep bond; this morning was one more time...
Please write in and tell me about your best "sun salutation."
