Did you know that often, when a child (or adult) with asthma is taken off dairy, the asthma disappears? Dairy is both an "acid" food, on the Acid-Alkaline connection, as well as a muccus and phlegm producing food. Because we actually do not have the enzymes to digest cow's milk (not only those who are lactose intolerant; everyone), it creates an acid environment in the body with associated health symptoms. When we cannot effectively digest something (physically or emotionally), it "clogs" us up and produces symptoms. Dairy is really the largest culprit of that. Symptoms that have been associated with high dairy consumption are: Muccus and phlegm; respiratory issues, including asthma; arthritis and bone degeneration...What?? you may say, but it's dairy. It has calcium. Yes, it does, but if we are unable to assimilate the calcium, it does not serve us. The statistics show that the countries with the highest dairy consumption have the highest rates of osteoporosis! If it creates an acid environmant, then the body looks to alkalize. Calcium is a great alkalizer, so the body leaches calcium from the bones. OK, back to symptoms and illness associated with dairy; breast cancer and prostate cancer.
What can I do in place of milk and for my children? Either buy almond, rice or hemp milk, or make fresh nutmilk; once you do that, you'll never go back.
Nutmilk:
raw almonds, cashews or Brazil nuts (not roasted; no additives)
in an open bowl of water, soak a bunch of nuts overnight.
In the morning, drain, rinse and dry. You can put the bulk back in the fridge in a container and they will last about 1 1/2 weeks.
Now you've soaked the nuts and they are a "living" food. The enzymes have been released to help with digestion. Nuts are super high in protein; almonds in calcium.
In a blender, take a handful of nuts. Add 1/2 blender of water. Blend and see it turn into a white milk! Now you can add either agave sweetener, honey or a couple of dates. You can even add Stevia as a sweetener, and some vanilla extract. For a different flavor, toss in a banana. Your kids (and you) will love it!
Just go nuts...

Early in the morning or later in the day are the most favorable time to go outside and 'breathe in' the sun. It is during these hours that the sun is not yet at its full force but still offers us the gift of Vitamin D.
Anytime I am creating a protocol for bone health, I always list the sun as a pivotal part of the healing and renewal process; the same for mood imbalances.
The most profound healing is not found in a pill or a capsule; it is found in nature. You would be surprised how much sun there is in Winter, too. By running outside all year round, I am always oxygenating my lungs, and by running during the warmest hours of Winter, I get the Winter sun; different than Summer sun but powerful in its own right. The Winter sun is what kept my mood elevated through the cold and snowy weather. I would smile at the sun and she would smile back at me. If Spring is when you come out of hibernation, now is your time! Go out in the morning for a walk and feel the warmth of the early morning sun. If you live near the beach or ocean, let your walk steer you in that direction. Being by the water's edge is a great way to detoxify. Allow for the ocean, just by walking beside it, to pull out the toxins with every exhale your breathe. Breathe in the gifts of the ocean floor. Did you know that these days, all the highest minerals are now in the ocean beds? If you've never caught a sunrise, try it and see what the experience is like for you. I often catch them while running in the late Spring or Summer. My favorite most recent sunsrise was in Nantucket over last Labor Day, meeting one of my oldest and dearest friends at Siasconset Beach for a morning sunrise and deep conversation, as only she and I know how to have it. I got there first, and only a couple of others were sitting on the beach. It was a very unusual time of year and month, as behind me was a full moon still up in the sky and before me the birth of a new sun; it brought tears to my eyes and gratitude to my soul. When Jessica joined me, we were in instant exhiliration and awe; the profound connection of our years' old friendship and love of Nantucket, along with the many times we had sat on a beach together and told each other our secrets, continued to solidify our deep bond; this morning was one more time...
Please write in and tell me about your best "sun salutation."

When Life Throws You Curves, Keep Eating Raw...
Food is Love:
Breakfast/Lunch
a ripe Bosc pear
32 ounces lemon water
Snacks:
10 Brazil nuts
Raw Revolution chocolate Hazelnut bar
Dinner:
salad with romaine, avocado, carrot, radish, sprouts, dulse and nutritional yeast with olive oil, stone ground mustard and sea salt
large portobella mushroom marinated 24 hours in Bragg's
Dessert:
bowl of Organic Nectars chocolate Hazelnut ice cream
24 ounces water
Yesterday my clutch on my car stopped working; today I spent most of my day focused on setting it up for repair in the best manner possible. A few days ago my hot water heater stopped working; the plumber will be back tomorrow to change the elements while my car is in the shop.
I borrowed my friend Karyn's car and showered at her place :)
Here's the point: Part of life is the stuff of life. It happens; it comes in cycles. The question is: Who do we want to be through it all? How do we want to show up for ourselves?
When the first automotive center quoted me the price to fix my car, I remembered to breathe and say, "All is OK. What are my options?" Options materialized. During the day of navigating all the phone calls, picking up my car, having it towed, calling back the plumber....and knowing that neither my taxes nor my book were getting focused on, I did remember to:
Thank my car for never having had any issues besides this and for how it has served me so well
Thank the mechanic who quoted me one quarter of my first quote
Thank my friend for loaning me her car so I could get to the office for a counseling session and stop at the market
Thank the automotive place for teaching me how to drive a stick without a clutch yesterday, so that I could get back home when my car got stuck
Thank the automotive place for having a towing service tow me home today at no cost
Thank myself for remembering that this is merely the stuff of life
I also did not:
Drown my anxiety and tension in foods that would not serve me
I remembered to:
Keep my food clean and high level so that I could stay clear, focused and filled with energy
I even smiled and thanked all my keepers for the flow of it all.
When life throws you curves, don't head for the Ben & Jerry's. The sugar will wack you out more.
If you really want Ben & Jerry's, have it sometime when you are choosing it from love; not from fear or anxiety.
When we choose foods from love (even non-raw), they digest, assimilate and nourish our bodies. No matter what you choose, from Rejuvelac (a fermented probiotic drink) to coffee, choose it and taste it with ecstatic love and excitement.
Remember: You are never 'good' or 'bad' for what you eat; you are merely choosing; so choose what honors your body and feeds your spirit.
Write in and let me know what choices served you today...

Be Patient with Raw and All Will Come...
Today's Food:
Breakfast/Lunch:
Raw Chocolate Morning Madness (High Energy Vibration) with coconut water, water, frozen banana, psyllium seed powder, flax seeds, almond butter, cacao powder and nibs and agave with alot of Revitaphi alkalizing superfood
Snack: 8 Brazil nuts
Dinner:
salad with romaine, collard greens, carrot, radish, mushrooms, sprouts, nutritional yeast and dulse with olive oil and sea salt
Dessert:
bowl of raw chocolate Hazelnut ice cream (Organic Nectars)
24 ounces water
I feel soooooo good! Raw food allows for so much energy in the body, because it keeps the molecular structure of the food intact so the 'frequency' is not being lowered (by processing or cooking). Our healthy cells awaken rather than fall asleep.
We live in a quick fix world: What is the latest diet and how can I lose ten pounds in two weeks? What surgery will get rid of this? Can I take a pill to feel better???? Please remember; raw food is not a diet or a quick fix; it is a comprehensive lifestyle that alters your perception of your reality :) as it fine tunes your body and your health. Hmmm, confused? Please know that some of the "results" of raw do not show up for a couple of years. In fact, it took me over two years to really feel that my energy was back to that of my childhood. But I will tell you this: I DO feel like that, and knowing that I can go out and run miles and miles in the cold and the heat, and then still be dancing at night, when once I was taking medication for underactive Thyroid and feeling depression, is quite a miracle. That I weighed 220 pounds at one point and now do not worry about my weight or even weigh myself is beautiful. It is the way we are supposed to feel. No nutritional lifestyle, in my personal and professional assessment, comes close to the possibilites and health benefits that the raw lifestyle enables. Remember how many years you have lived with an imbalance in your body, mind or spirit; please allow for some time to heal it. The possibilties are infinite.
Please write in with questions and comments.

Playing Hookie is Advisable
Tomorrow will be 60 degrees and sunny. I want to take a moment to send my prayers and energies to all people who have gone through hardship as a result of the storm on Saturday. I know some homes are still without power in Westchester County, Rockland County and Connecticut. Trees are still down all over. People are displaced from their homes. Individuals and stores lost their goods that were refrigerated or frozen. Cars and sections of homes were demolished. Two people died from falling trees. Let's send a prayer out to all concerned; May you be showered with golden light.
In Gratitude for My Food:
Today:
28 ounces lemon water
28 ounces Brazil nutmilk smoothie with:
soaked Brazil nuts
water
flax seeds
psyllium seeds
banana
mango
lucuma powder
almond butter
agave
Lunch:
4 slices Manna carrot raisin bread with smear of almond butter
Dinner:
Large salad with Romaine, carrot, cuke, broccoli sprouts, sunflower seeds with avocado and dulse
dressing of olive oil, nutritional yeast, sea salt and nori shake
After Dinner:
bowl of Organic Nectars mint chocolate raw ice cream sprinkled with some pecans
12 ounces water
Tomorrow my friend Liz is coming over to play hookie with me and take a hike in the warmth of early Spring. Then we'll head over to the beach with lunch in hand.
Liz is a CPA and an Empowerment Coach and I am a Health Counselor.
I used to give myself a hard time about taking a day or half a day to play. What about this project or that upcoming workshop or starting this new thing on my list? Isn't it negligent to leave it all, take off and spread my wings? It is not; in fact, it is a vital component of our health. These times of play balance out our times when creative juices must flow to generate new creations in our livelihood.
"Listen...do you wanna know a secret...do you promise not to tell...?" It's not from the "doing" that we really create and soar to new heights in our "work". It's from our connection to nature; to our divine Source; to the soul spirit that lives within us and already knows it all; to the quiet space inside of us; to the passionate, playful being that we are.
Try this experiment: Go on a hike or to the beach; go to your most favorite place and hang out; take a run; do something that brings you immense joy.
Now, hold the intention that all the guidance for whatever "project" you are working on will just flow through you and you will receive it.
See what happens....
Let me know how it turns out.
With Blessings for the Beauty and Forces of Nature,
Hope

We've got to "Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative"
What I ate today
Today's Raw Rejuvenations:
Breakfast:
28 ounces Brazil nutmilk smoothie with:
soaked Brazil nuts and water; banana; mango; psyllium seeds; flax seeds; lucuma powder; raw crunchy almond butter; cacao nibs; agave
Lunch: at The Stand in Norwalk, CT: Thanks, Carissa!
large salad with tons of sprouts, spiralized beets, beautiful mix of greens, grape tomatoes and avocado with a cashew, garlic, lemon dressing and kelp shake and cayenne
1/2 Curried collard wrap with curried almond pate, red peppers, avocado and sprouts
Snack:
Way too much yummy raw goji berry granola from 'Two Moms in the Raw'
Dinner:
Salad with romaine, radish, carrot, purple cabbage, sunflower seeds with a dressing of nutritional yeast, olive oil, nori shake and sea salt
"Dessert":
4 rolled dates in coconut
12 ounces of water
OK, so someone's gotta talk about this. I always tell clients, when they bashfully ask me if its OK to get a little descriptive about their bathroom habits, "Go for it! This is the place to do it.I love talking about this subject." Then of course we get really graphic! So often, they assume that eliminating (that's #2, people) should be once a day, once every two or three days, and I've heard once a week as well. When I tell them that the rule of thumb is "meal in; meal out," and that could mean three, four or five times a day, they are completely shocked. Yes, that's true, and I'm already up to four healthy eliminations today! Makes sense with my food intake, right?
How to increase healthy elimination? Drink more water, but not during your meals, as it impedes digestion when added to a meal. Start your day with a 32 ounce mason jar of lemon water, and have some at night, too.
I know the psyllium seed powder in my morning smoothie this morning definitely helped, as psyllium is a colon cleanser and sweeps the colon clean. It also contributes to heart health.
Step up your greens: leafy greens, green superfoods (spirulina, chlorella, barley grass), anything green with chlorophyll
Salads are fabulous with all their fiber; so are fruits (unless you are dealing with an inflammatory issue in the body).
Exercise Exercise: Guess why we have legs??? No, not to sit in front of the TV; to move them and bring oxygen into your cells, joints and muscles. Do anything that "moves you," from dance to running to yoga to teaching your dog how to catch a Frisbee; if you love it, you will keep doing it with passion, and passion is the key to health.
See how your mood lifts when you are eliminating regularly. You are letting go of any debris and waste that shouldn't be hanging around, and that includes emotional bagage.
See how your energy lifts.
From what comes out in the bathroom to how we view our bodies in the bedroom, "We've got to...accentuate the positive; eliminate the negative."

Raw Rocks & Homage to the Spruce
What I ate today:
28 ounces of water with lemon
28 ounces of fresh nutmilk smoothie:
soaked Brazil nuts, water, banana, mango, cacao nibs, almond butter, agave - YUM!!!
large salad with lettuce, carrot, radish, purple cabbage, broccoli sprouts, sunflower seeds with dessing of nutritional yeast, olive oil, cayenne & sea salt
guacamole with avocado, tomato, purple onion, sea salt, lemon, cayenne, hot sauce, dulse shake, nori shake; with carrot and celery
manna carrot raisin bread with smears of raw crunchy almond butter (not totally raw at temp of baking, but close enough for this raw foodist today!)
Looked out my window this morning and saw the beautiful blue spruce at the end of the driveway uprooted and stretched across the driveway. The City of Stamford got slammed with the wind and rain storm yesterday. I saw this graceful tree swaying during the day. This morning I cried for him. One time, when I was in a writers' group, I wrote a poem about him and the other spruce, who we lost some years ago. Today, I went down to speak to the tree and offer him some healing touch. Nature really is the Divine Source; all else flows from there. I love you, tree; you made a difference in my life.
It's amazing how increasing my water again is just blasting my energy. Starting my day with a mason jar of lemon water both cleanses and detoxifies my liver daily as well as hydrating me. As a result, I feel energy surging through me and an emotional clarity; as if my brain is also functioning at a higher level.
I loved that the storm allowed me to slow down and stay inside all day yesterday. I purposely did nothing intensive; no cleaning; no Holistic Empire projects; only leisurely detailed journal writing; lots of eating, with special note to finishing off the final piece of raw berry cheesecake that Liz had made me for my birthday; juicy phone conversations with friends and time to connect with me.
As a result, I was so energized today that I went out to run in the rain. I took a great five miler this morning. At the beach, there were sections of the path that were no longer visible and filled with water from the Long Island Sound. I felt like I was running a Bushwack race, maneuvering over sand and grass to make my way around. Benches were sitting in large pools of water. The temperature was mild, and I had a mask on to keep my face dry. It was so exhilirating.
I feel the desire to do a Spring cleanse; it will probably come in the form of a juice feast. I anticipate doing a week-long cleanse this month and then a larger one in June. Gabriel Cousens is spearheading a month-long juice fast to combat global warming. One of the largest sources of global warming comes from the methane produced from factory farming. Coming together through juice fasting is a proactive way to take a stand on global warming and against the suffering created from the factory farming of animals. Who wants to join me?? Juice feasting (as the Raw Foodists have named it) creates so much energy in the body, as the digestive system is not being taxed; therefore no heavy digestion; no inflamation; alkalized body system.
One more day of rain? and then Tuesday Spring is back. Soon I'll start to add in warm weather fruits.

"It's a New Day; It's a New Age": The Holistic Empire is stepping up and bringing you along! I want to thank my former partner Alan Berger for co-creating this Empire with me; everything in our intention was pure and full of love for humanity. I am so blessed to have shared that vision with another, in all its ecstasy, and now I bless Alan in all his present magical endeavors and commitments to the children of this world and to people of all cultures, as I know he blesses me in mine. We are all one. So, enjoy reading our earlier posts, as they came from high-level health and supreme love. Feel free to comment on those, too, as there's lots of "food for thought" in them.
So, as I look back on 3 years of being a raw foodist, and numerous years as a Health Counselor, what strikes me most in observing all humanity in our quest for health is really what brought me to this field all those years ago: People are suffering with their relationship to food! It's the emotional component that overrides everything else. Food, our most intimate partner, brings us pain and suffering. We can always talk about alkalizing our bodies, getting off of medications, eating raw or vegan or macro and on and on, but the piece that is most missing is a sense of freedom, peace and joy in our relationship with our food. Who loves their body???? I mean Really, Really loves their body and shows it??? Who only has a positive conversation running through their head when they pick up a piece of food that might not be on their daily food plan?? Please, please write me and let me know if you are one of those people, as my personal and professional experience has me put the number of you that might fall into that category in the single digits, if at all.
At a party last Saturday night, around the dessert table, I watched four women with a mixture of bodies, from slender to medium, all help themselves to the cakes while saying out loud, "I was positive I had decided I would not be eating dessert tonight. I really shouldn't be doing this." I want to ask you, readers, what message do you think we are offering our bodies, and ultimately our cells when we recite this mantra over food every single day? Give up? (please comment back)...I'll give you a hint: We not only digest our food, we digest the way in which we communicate our food to our bodies; "shouldn't, don't, bad, guilty, fat, wrong." This is the language with which we digest our food, and this is what get digested and assimilated into our cells.
Please comment back with your thoughts, as I am on a mission to teach you how to relate to your food like you would relate to and partner with your most intimate relationship. Imagine if food were your lover; your husband; your girlfriend, your spouse? How would you treat your relationship??
